POLICE and the government have joined forces to issue further warnings to the public about causing disturbances at the Sulby Claddaghs camp site.
In a hard-hitting statement, police inspector Derek Flint has warned anyone who steps out of line that “action will be rapidly and decisively taken”.
It follows an incident last weekend when a drunken youth injured fellow campers and vandalised the toilet facilities at Sulby Claddaghs.
The Northern Neighbourhood Police were called by the Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture’s Security Guard to an incident involving drunken youths and noise which escalated to violence and resulted in the arrest of one male.
The 18 year old was later charged and kept in police detention for appearance at court where he pleaded guilty to offences of affray and criminal damage. He was remanded in custody until early September for sentencing.
Inspector Flint said; “We warned people at the start of the season what the consequences would be if problems came to our notice on the Claddaghs. We have had a pretty good year so far, but if anyone is going to think about stepping out of line, then be warned that action, potentially as serious as that we took on Saturday, will be rapidly and decisively taken.”
DEFA Minister John Shimmin echoed the points made by Inspector Flint. “The reaction of our G4S security guard was well founded and I cannot thank the police enough for their swift and effective action in the arrest and pursuit of prosecution.
“The wider camping community and the residents of the area don’t need this sort of behaviour spoiling their enjoyment, and with the police we will vigorously pursue those who abuse the privilege of using this outstandingly beautiful area.
“I will watch the rest of the season closely, but any deterioration in standards will force us to consider the future operation of camping on the Claddaghs.”
