77% rise in "quality assured" restaurants

by isleofman.com 4th August 2010

MANX restaurants are improving - and that’s official.

The number of restaurants and eating establishments on the government’s Quality Assured list has risen by 77% in the last year - from 18 to 32 - which has been welcomed by Isle of Man Tourism.

“There has been a steady and notable improvement in the standard of services delivered which is to be welcomed,” said Geoff Corkish, Political Member for Isle of Man Tourism.

The new list of “quality assured” and “highest quality assured” restaurants is contained in the new ‘Taste of Man’ directory which is distributed widely and used extensively by visitors to the Island.

“Food and drink is an important pillar of the Isle of Man’s economy and the ‘Taste Isle of Man’ directory is an invaluable tool for visitors,” added Mr Corkish. “As a Department, we are striving to drive up quality standards and we must continue doing so in line with the expectations of our visitors to keep this industry sustainable.”

The Taste Isle of Man quality assessment scheme was introduced in 2008 to independently assess the Island’s restaurants, pubs, takeaways and other eateries and the Taste directory was first produced last year, for the benefit of both visitors to the Island and local residents.

Each of the establishments listed are members of the scheme and inspected annually in all aspects including cleanliness, bar and restaurant, hospitality, service and food quality. Those who are accredited are awarded a ‘Quality Assured’ or ‘Highest Quality Assured’ accolade.

The restaurants are also assessed on their use and promotion of local produce and those achieving a score over 60% are awarded the ‘Harvest Isle of Man’ accolade, which is supported by the department of Environment, Food and Agriculture. Geoff Corkish added, “Over the past few years there has been a steady and notable improvement in the standard of services delivered which is to be welcomed. I wish to say a big thank you to everyone who has taken part in this worthwhile scheme.”
