RAMSEY Golf Week has concluded with Robbie Moore claiming the narrowest of wins in the prestigious Town Cup.
The Golf Week opened with the Mann Link Travel AM AM. Ian Liddle and Brian Kelly have sponsored this for over 20 years and, being keen competitors, fought tooth and nail to win! Steady golf was the best strategy with the course playing fast and a birdie 3 on the 8th by Mike Goddard put them into second place ahead of the in-form Paul Morris, Tony White and colossal hitters Tony Lloyd Davis and Dave Murray.
First place went to the Captain’s dream team, except he didn’t get picked! Ged McGuinness’s birdie on the 2nd started the ball rolling with further birdies from Peter Collister on the 4th, Sean Cunnigham on the 12th and Trevor Boyles on the 17th.
Monday was the premier open golf competition of the year, the Ramsey Town Cup sponsored by Dave O’Sullivan Roofing and Ramsey Town Commissioners. Over two rounds on the toughest course on the Island the result was always going to be close.
Brian Monk started well with a first lap 66 including birdies on the 8th and 10th. Stu Douglas made an early dart for both gross and net prizes with a gross 72, net 67 after birdies on the tricky 3rd and 10th but Davy Jones staked his claim for the gross with an almost faultless 70 despite early difficulties on the first.
Castletown star, Kenny Chesterton never fails to impress at Ramsey and a 68 kept him in the hunt. In form Robbie Moore struggled with a 9 on the 11th but recovered well to shoot a net 71. In the afternoon Davy Jones 69 took the gross prize from Douglas visitor, Steve Skillicorn and Kenny Chesterton.
The main prize took a few interesting turns. Back from injury and now playing well, Dennis McGurgan, birdied the 10th and put together a two round score of 139. He was joined by Paul Morris who’s afternoon 66 included a fine birdie 3 on the 15th. Kenny Chesterton shot a 70 but must be gutted after a seven on the 2nd hole which probably cost him the Town Cup.
John Brooks, Robbie Moore and Steve Westcott played excellent golf together in a hot and nervy afternoon. John Brooks started well but bogey’s on the 14th, 15th and 18th cost him dearly. Robbie Moore was steady with birdies on the 9th and 16th - wiping out a double bogey on the 13th. He shot a tremendous 65 and his two round 136 was enough to edge out Kenny Chesterton, Paul Morris and Denis McGurgan.
A thrilled Robbie Moore thanked his playing partners for helping him keep his nerve on the back nine and said winning the Town Cup was “right up there!”. One final note, you never know what’s round the corner in golf.
Fergus Murdoch posted a first round no score on the 11th after losing two balls only to hole out on the 12th with a crisp high draw 5 iron. A packed clubhouse was pleased to celebrate the Scot’s success!
