A history of Castletown outlined

A new history of Castletown has described how the ancient capital had once actively opposed the promotion of tourism.

'Profile of Castletown' by Manx historian Derek Winterbottom quotes Sir Jospeh Qualtrough in the 1950's, saying two factions 'fought in a deadly battle, one for and one against encouraging visitors'.

The book charts the progress of Castletown from the origins of Castle Rushen to the building of Callow's Yard.

Chairman of the town's commissioners Colin Leather says the outook today is very different:
