Exciting day's golf at Ramsey on Sunday

by isleofman.com 26th July 2010

RAMSEY Golf Club president John Mead held his medal competition on Sunday.

There were 120 players competing in an exciting day's golf followed by a full clubhouse for the evening presentation.

The tricky collars of grass surrounding the greens made good short chipping essential to score well. The good weather did allow some low scoring.

Ian Jones, after a successful winter, is starting to re-emerge as a contender for Ramsey Golf Week. His 66 was not enough to beat off Paul Routledge’s 65 for fourth place but shows that he is coming into form at the right time of the year.

Third place went to Robbie Moore, who after a winter of lessons with Andy Dyson has had a great year. He played some steady golf tee to green almost all the way round to mark his best ever gross of 76 and a net 63.

The battle for the top spot was between Colin Taylor and Tony Jones. Both players carded a net 63 and Colin Taylor’s gross 70 earned him the gross prize whilst Tony Jones' steady round got him the senior prize.

This just left the nett and with both players managing the course well it was always going to be about the putting. Colin nearly blew it altogether on the par 3, 12th.

He made the green but a sudden gust of wind on the back stroke of his putt knocked him off balance. This normally steady putter was clearly shaken by his miss and couldn’t make the return putt either and carded a double bogey.

Despite this disaster he pulled himself together and a two on the 17th was enough to give him a better back 3 score to take first prize from Tony. Next week is Ramsey Golf Week and of course the Town Cup, sponsored by Dave O’Sullivan.

The Island’s premier nett competition trophy will again be strongly fought for with the in form players, Davie Kinrade and Robbie Moore, hunting the big prize. Mann Link Travel sponsor Saturday’s AM AM, ASL Limited sponsor Wednesday’s Maughold Mixed Foursomes, Collins Stewart the Thursday medal and Chrystals end the week with Saturday’s 4BBB.
