A Somerset MP has hit back at claims she cheated the council tax system after allowing DJ Andy Kershaw to stay at her home while he was wanted by Manx police.
Liberal Democrat, Sedgemoor MP Tessa Munt, allowed Mr Kershaw - a Peel resident - to stay with her – but claimed a council tax rebate for living alone at the house.
Earlier this week it emerged Sedgemoor District Council is investigating the matter, saying it would attempt to recover any money owed to it.
But Mrs Munt says she did nothing wrong by allowing Mr Kershaw and a UK-based doctor to stay at the house on a temporary basis.
In a statement, Mrs Munt said Mr Kershaw was a friend who’d stayed at her home during a difficult time in his life when he was separating from his partner.
Mrs Munt explained he’d arrived from the Island, came with a rucksack and his dog and had visited friends across the UK.
She said she’d looked after his dog and that Mr Kershaw wasn’t living with her, he was on holiday.
But she said Sedgemoor District Council was right to investigate who is registered at her address and who actually lives there.
