Challenging day at Le Tour

by isleofman.com 20th July 2010

Tuesday’s 16th stage of the Tour de France developed into a bit of a theatrical experience.

It was won by Pierrick Fedrigo's on a challenging day through the Pyrenees after he overtook the seven-time winner Lance Armstrong - who'd been in the lead group for much of the day - in the final metres of the race.

Spain's Alberto Contador retained the Yellow Jersey for the overall lead, despite finishing just under seven minutes behind Fedrigo.

Thor Hushovd won the final sprint to the line from the peloton to finish 10th and gain six points, the Norwegian reclaiming the points leader's green jersey from Alessandro Petacchi.

Mark Cavendish was 115th today and remains third in the sprinters’ table but is now a further four points off the pace, 29 behind.

Tomorrow’s a much needed rest day followed by Thursday's 174km stage, which will see the riders start in Pau and finish at the summit of Tourmalet - an 18.5km climb.
