Magnificent seventh title for Davy Jones

by isleofman.com 20th July 2010

IN the Steve Westcott –Care Property Preservations sponsored Ramsey Golf Club Championships tough conditions were the order of the weekend no matter when you played.

Despite that the players put together some exciting golf and good scores. With both a net and gross prize on offer over the two days the overall results demanded some real consistency.

The previous week’s form players, Steve Waters, George Lawson and Alan Corlett all shot under par on the first day but Charlie Whip stole the show and ended the first day with a net 62 and 4 shot lead over nearest rival Alan Corlett on a net 66.

In the gross prize and going for a magnificent 7th title, the former Island Champion, Davy Jones, showed there was no dip in form caused by the disappointment of the Island Championships.

His 71 just edged out Stu Douglas and Jeff Ward on the first day.

Ian Rowley’s 77 was a disappointing round despite just coming back from injury.  On Sunday Ian and Jeff Ward put in great 74’s but Davy was unstoppable and another 71 gave him the Ramsey Golf Club Champion title for by 6 shots from Jeff Ward, Ian Rowley and Stu Douglas.

Afterwards, Davy addressed the Juniors at the presentation and with words of encouragement challenged them to take over his position in the not too distant future.

Charlie Whipp was always going to be under pressure on the second day. Could he keep it going into Sunday was the question on everyone’s mind.

Jeff Ward’s net total of 138 set the pace from Alan Corlett who shot a commendable 139. Charlie on the other hand was steadfast and came in with a 4 under par net 66 to take the net prize by a mile with 128.  Charlie was still smiling even after finding out his new handicap! Next weekend John Mead will be the honoured guest in his President’s Day Competition.
