A POLICE inspector has said the fact people still put lives at risk by drink driving is "deplorable".
Inspector Mark Britton made the comment after statistics reveal that during June 11 to July 11 - the World Cup period - there were 12 arrests for drink drive related offences in the Island despite the police running a high-profile campaign.
A total of 363 vehicles were stopped and out of the 12 arrests nine people have been charged, one person has been bailed and two will face no further action.
Inspector Britton, of the roads policing unit, said: "The fact that people still put lives at risk by drinking and driving is deplorable.
"Officers from the Isle of Man Constabulary continue this kind of enforcement activity throughout the year. Officers have power under the law to ask for a specimen of breath under particular circumstances.
"It is a key part of road safety that people need to understand that the drink drive limit is set quite low and could be set lower in the future.
"Whatever that level is it is particularly difficult to try and second guess whether you are over the limit, you could still be impaired if you were under that limit.
"This drink drive campaign was run in conjunction with the Department of Infrastructure who produced posters depicting the prospect of whether people would spend their World Cup in the hospital or in the jail.
"Sentencing is a matter for the courts but the message is quite simple – drinking and driving wrecks lives."
