ESSENTIAL refurbishment works within a manhole on the New Castletown Road will lead to a single lane closure and a 20mph speed limit being enforced.

The Isle of Man Water and Sewerage Authority will carry out the work, which is due to last a month, close to the Quarterbridge roundabout.

The manhole is on the Douglas trunk sewer and the work is scheduled to start on Monday.

The work will see ducting installed across the southbound carriageway, which will then be followed by leak-sealing work to the manhole.

There will be a single lane closure on the eastbound A5 approach to the Quarterbridge roundabout for the duration of the work and a temporary 20mph speed limit will be in place throughout the construction period.

Traffic and pedestrian access will be maintained at all times.

Peter Winstanley, the authority’s director of operations, said: "The leak-sealing works are required to reduce the infiltration of groundwater gushing into the manhole.

"While the leak-sealing work is being undertaken within the manhole, it is necessary to pump water out of the manholes and across the road to a manhole in the National Sports Centre.

"The ducts to be laid across and beneath the New Castletown Road are required to accommodate the pump delivery hoses."

The authority apologises for any inconvenience caused by the work.
