Could new tax threaten Island air services?

by isleofman.com 1st July 2010

There are fears a new tax on air travel could threaten the viability of airlines serving the Isle of Man.

Proposals were put forward in the UK budget to replace Air Passenger Duty with a 'per plane' tax.

At present, passengers on Manx flights to and from the UK and Ireland are charged ?11 each way.

A charge on the aircraft - irrespective of how many people on board - could mean some routes are no longer economic.

Infrastructure Minister Phil Gawne has already met with FlyBe, amid concern about the future of its regional services.

He says the Island must make a strong case to the UK government, to protect our existing air services.
