Island's first 'signed' performance at the Gaiety Theatre

by isleofman.com 24th June 2010

The curtain goes up on a 'first' for deaf people in the Island at the Gaiety Theatre tonight.

A performance of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat will be translated into sign language by one of the UK's foremost deaf 'signers' Peter Whittaker.

He's been invited here by the Manx Deaf Society as part of a campaign to make theatre and other live performances more accessible.

Mr Whitaker can interpret not only the words - sung and spoken - but the music, atmosphere and excitement of a live show.

Chair of the Society Julie Smith says the translater opens up a new world for deaf people, but has a low-key presence inside the theatre: (play clip)

The performance starts at 8pm.
