THE memorable TT Week joint display by the Purple Helmets and the White Helmets on Douglas promenade is being officially recognised by a local pub.
Ray Corkill, landlord at The Railway Inn in Union Mills - the unofficial HQ of the Purple Helmets - now has a unique record of the event by showing off the helmets from both motorcycle teams in a display cabinet at his pub.
Derry Kissack, unofficial “chairman” and expert outside broadcaster for the Purple Helmets, handed over the two helmets to Ray at the Railway on Sunday, to mark the momentous occasion.
The White Helmets - the official Royal Signals motorcycle display team - were the original inspiration behind the creation of the “world famous” Purple Helmets who were delighted to be asked to appear alongside their heroes during the TT.
In fact, the two motorcycle display team have more similarities than might at first be realised. They both provide precision displays and wear their own distinctive uniforms. The only difference between them is the interpretation of the words “precision” and “uniform” !
“I think the White Helmets thought maybe we would try to show off and compete with them,” said Derry. “But we were genuinely really pleased to be asked to give a joint display. They are a really class act and a super bunch of lads. It was a great day for everyone and once they realised we were on their side then it worked out just great.”
The presentation of one of the team’s white helmets was a real surprise to the Manx riders who immediately decided it should go on display for the public to see. And where better than the Railway Hotel - a favourite of the Purple Helmets for many years.
But why did the Isle of Man lads choose the name “Purple Helmets”?
“Ask your mother”, said Derry Kissack.
