Record 1st class degrees at Business School

by isleofman.com 22nd June 2010
A RECORD number of International Business School business students have gained first class degrees in results announced by the institution this morning.

The issuing body, Liverpool John Moores University, have awarded four first class degrees in business to IBS students. According to UK Higher Education Statistics Agency (2009), Isle of Man Business School students are, on average, six times more likely to achieve first class honours.

“This is an incredible year for the business students,” said Ged Watts, Director at the University. “It serves to underline the quality of the teaching at IBS.  It's evident that the personal attention and hard work has paid off.

“We welcome these incredible results and wish to pass on our heartfelt congratulations to students and academic staff alike. Those not going on to postgraduate programmes, will be, or, are currently employed on the Island and therefore fully contributing to the development of the Island economy.”

Student James Brew, who has just received news of his first class business management degree said, “I'm over the moon, it's been a long time coming - but worth the wait.  There are only 16 students in my year and absolutely everyone achieved a solid degree, which is brilliant.”

Now that he has his results, James - soon to climb Kilimanjaro for charity - explained his favourite subject, “Marketing, definitely.  I majored in that and loved the diversity of the course - dealing with contemporary issues such as global warming, anti-capitalism and green marketing on one level and then modules of practical relevance like designing  a profitable  business concept from the ground up.”

In response to concerns regarding skills shortage on the Island, Professor Mike Lloyd-Williams, Head of Academic Programmes, said, “Once again we are very proud to provide the Manx economy with some quality home-grown graduates.

“They have highly relevant knowledge and skills that will be useful where ever they decide to take their careers; be it in within any industry, their own businesses or the public sector.”

Mintra Mitchell, 39, a mature student who will also graduate in October, said,  “I decided to study for a degree to enhance my career and I have found studying a wonderful life changing experience.

“One of the most important things I wanted to gain was skills and knowledge which I have achieved but I have gained so much more than that; I have learned about myself, had a great experience and made some lifelong friends.”

She added: “The environment of the Nunnery is special, especially in summer, it's so quiet and relaxed.”
