THE creation of a tenpin bowling and leisure centre at the site of the former swimming pool in Queens Promenade, Ramsey, has moved a step closer.
Ramsey Commissioners have submitted a petition to the Department of Infrastructure seeking approval for the granting of a 25-year lease to the proposed centre’s Manx-registered operating company, Buffalo Bowling and Leisure Limited.
The company’s directors, Alan Price, David Hensman and Ted Ryle have a combined experience of 30 years operating tenpin bowling centres in the UK.
Chairman of Ramsey Commissioners Nigel Malpass said: "This proposal by Mr Price and his fellow directors is an unequivocal vote of confidence in Ramsey. It also reflects the views expressed by many of the people of Ramsey when last year the Commission was presented with a petition of 1,320 signatories calling for the building to be transformed into a tenpin bowling centre.
"I am delighted the Commission is now in a position to seek approval from the Department of Infrastructure for the granting of a lease to Buffalo Bowling and Leisure, a move which takes us a step further towards the creation of this much-needed recreational amenity for the people of Ramsey and the Isle of Man."
Buffalo Bowling’s Alan Price said: "Planning approval for change of use has been granted and our architects are now in discussion with the building control officers regarding the building work needed to adapt the building, which will include infilling the existing pool voids and creating a floor for the main hall.
"We not only share the commissioners’ vision for a revitalised Ramsey but also their wish to progress the project as soon as possible and provide what we are confident will be a major visitor attraction for the town."
The former swimming pool building was decommissioned and ownership transferred to the Commission in July 2009. Following a process of advertising for expressions of interest for future use of the premises and consideration of detailed proposals from a short list of four parties, Buffalo Bowling and Leisure’s proposal to create a tenpin bowling complex was seen as offering the greatest benefit to the town.
