POLICE closed off an area in Ramsey after a Second World War high explosive artillery shell was found in a lane by a member of the public.
The incident happened about 2.15pm yesterday when the shell was discovered in the lane betweeen Walpole Drive and Queen's Drive West.
At the time it was not known where the item had come from, how long it had been there or whether it was still live.
Northern Neighbourhood Policing Team staff attended and closed off the area for public safety. It was later found on expert examination to be empty of explosive and was safely removed from the area.
Sergeant Juan Clague from Ramsey Police Station said: " The item dated from 1941 and had undoubtedly been a souvenir for someone.
"The round was a genuine piece of ammunition and if still containing explosives would have been of potential danger to the public.
"It was not obvious from initial inspection as to whether this was safe or not and it was extremely irresponsible of someone to simply dump the item.
"We would request that any member of the public who wishes to dispose of ammunition, current or historic or explosive material, which could cause concern if found, to dispose of such items in a responsible manner through the appropriate channels.
"If in doubt contact your local police station for advice. The police will safely dispose of old ammunition to prevent such incidents and potential danger and alarm being caused to the public.
"Old ammunition or grenades have been found on many occasions throughout the Island and are a reminder of the Island's military past and the public is thanked for their diligence in locating and reporting such finds.
"If any items are located the public should not move or touch such items and should immediately contact the police."
