Police urge bank customers to hang up on conman

by isleofman.com 18th June 2010

A CONMAN has been ringing Manx residents claiming to be from the Isle of Man Bank.

Police said there has been a flurry of unsolicited telephone calls in which a male caller asks questions such as "Are you happy with your bank account?" or invites subscription to a shares issue.

The caller seems to be working with partial, out-of-date information and refuses to give a name or a contact telephone number.

Inspector Derek Flint said: "Whoever you bank with, your bank will never phone you up and ask you to confirm your personal details over the phone.

"This intrusive con will catch some people out.  We are particularly concerned for vulnerable members of our community.  If you have given out your details over the phone, please contact your bank right away.

"There is no realistic chance of finding out where these calls are coming from.  ‘Keep it to yourself’ and ‘hang up’ is the best advice I can give."
