WORK has started today to replace a vital part of the Ramsey swing bridge mechanism.
The bridge closed to traffic and pedestrians at 6am this morning and will be closed until 6pm on Sunday, June 20 while the Department of Infrastructure carries out the work.
The slew ring, a vital part of the bridge mechanism that allows the bridge to move, will be replaced. The existing ring is thought to be about 100 years old.
The new ring has been manufactured and will be fitted by the works division’s team of blacksmiths this week.
Member for the works division Graham Cregeen MHK said: ''It is comforting to know that the division has the depth of skill and knowledge to be able to maintain our vital strategic assets without the need to bring in a specialist contractor from the UK.
''We will do everything possible to ensure the works to the bridge will be completed by Sunday, June 20 so that the bridge can be reopened before the full closure of Bowring Road on June 28.''
