Surprise for Manx woman honoured by Queen

by isleofman.com 12th June 2010

A Manx woman who supports the families of foreign diplomats has been named in the Queen's Birthday Honours List.

Doreen Underhill has been awarded the MBE for services to the military attache wives' committee in London.

Mrs Underhill organises weekly meetings for the wives of army attaches who are posted to the capital and often find themselves isolated.

She helps them find their feet, make friends and learn the language.

Mrs Underhill was born Dorreen Corris. She was educated at Murray's Road school and the former Douglas High School for Girls, married a Manxman and raised her family here. She still has a home in Douglas.

We asked if she had had any hint the honour was on the way?
