Questions on proxy voting and election trusts

by isleofman.com 12th June 2010

Liberal Vannin Party leader Peter Karran will quiz Chief Minister Tony Brown on issues raised in the recent Douglas East by-election, in Tynwald on Tuesday.

The Onchan MHK has questions about political funding and the Island's proxy voting system.

He will ask whether many members of the government were funded by election trusts in the last general election, and he particularly want to know if any ministers received cash from such sources in 2006.

In a second question to Mr Brown, Mr Karran will ask how many proxy votes were applied for and issued in the recent by-election.

As well as that, he wants to know how many proxy votes each of the six candidates received and what the Council of Ministers is doing to stop any abuse of the system.

The campaign manager of unsuccessful candidate Kevin Woodford and four other people were questioned and released on police bail over alleged irregularities relating to the proxy voting system.

Also in the days leading up to the Douglas East by-election, Mr Brown has made it clear he wanted to see an end to anonymous political donations, and referred the matter to the Council of Ministers' Governance Committee for urgent consideration.
