New MHK gets straight down to business

by isleofman.com 10th June 2010
CHRIS Robertshaw is wasting no time getting down to business as the Island’s newest MHK, asking a series of questions at next week’s sitting of Tynwald.

He is asking five of the 20 questions set down for the sitting, covering a wide range of subjects, including the Isle of Man Children Bill, motorcycle road tax, inter-departmental priorities, proxy and absent voter forms and the Government Information Bill.

Mr Robertshaw has always been an outspoken critic of Government and his election as MHK for East Douglas was followed by a promise to campaign for political reform, particularly the way the Council of Ministers uses its block vote.

He said, "I think there is a strong flow from the electors of Douglas East saying to Government 'get a grip'. "

He described the Council of Ministers as having a “club-like” atmosphere. "I will take that to the House of Keys and get that message out. For me, this election is the start of a campaign until the General Election when we will have a good House of Keys once again.

“I will be standing up and speaking very firmly about the things in which I believe.”

The East Douglas by-election proved to be highly controversial for a number of reasons, leading to Mr Robertshaw’s Tynwald questions about proxy and absent voter forms.
