Aisha is Young Citizen of the Year

by isleofman.com 10th June 2010
THE Isle of Man’s 2009 Young Citizen of the Year award has been won by Aisha Howard.

The award was presented by the Lieutenant Governor for Aisha’s “outstanding contribution to young people in the Isle of Man community”.

The Young Citizen of the Year award is made annually by The Queen’s Golden Jubilee Trust and is given in recognition of outstanding citizenship  demonstrated by a young individual on the Isle of Man.

Aisha has been acknowledged for her leadership and support for children and young people in care and leaving care to have a voice and develop skills which will enable them to make a positive contribution to the community, now and in the future as they become adults.

There are around 115 children who are looked after by Social Services and their partner agencies, because their parents, for a number of reasons, cannot do so.

At the launch of the government’s pledge as ‘corporate parents’ to children and young people in care in July 2009 Aisha spoke about her own experiences and the added challenges and difficulties faced by young people who grow up in the care system.

This personal story provided a greater understanding and was enlightening to many guests present. Aisha has since worked with other young people to assist them to develop confidence and skills in presenting, speaking and leadership.

In addition to her work on behalf of young people in care, Aisha is also studying for A/S levels at college, does youth work and is a member of the Island’s Foster Panel.

Martyn Quayle MHK, Minister for Social Care, said, “I am delighted that Aisha Howard’s significant contribution has been officially recognised, and I offer her my sincere congratulations. The Department of Social Care is very supportive of young people in care and wants to help care leavers to develop skills and confidence.

“We recently confirmed this continuing support by extending funding for the coming year to support Aisha’s work with young people in care through the Voices and Participation programme.”
