'Unattractive' banners must be removed

by isleofman.com 7th June 2010

A firm of travel agents has been told it can't keep advertising banners on two properties in Onchan and Braddan.

Freedom Travel placed large orange banners in Sunnybank Avenue and Peel Road, but didn't have planning permission for them.

The firm's application for retrospective permission was turned down, and during an appeal an independent inspector described the offending items as strident, incongruous and unattractive.

Neil Holt said both banners detracted from the character of the areas they were in and recommended permission be refused.

Infrastructure Minister Phil Gawne agreed, and warned enforcement action would be taken if the banners weren't taken down.
