Going for a song! - 'items sold cheaply' to pay for care

by isleofman.com 1st June 2010

Fans of Sir Norman Wisdom have been picking up bargains at a sale of memorabilia in the United Kingdom.

The auction took place earlier this month, with no publicity, at Toovey's auction house in Sussex.

Those who attended the sale say they picked up rare collectors items for a fraction of their true value.

Johnny Mans, who has been Sir Norman's agent for decades, told the UK press cash raised at the auction will be used to pay for the comedian's care.

John Moss reports (text, below, from attached audio file):

The sale was organised by Sir Norman's children, and saw dozens of items go under the hammer.

But, according to some at the sale, pieces worth tens of thousands of pounds sold for just a few hundred.

Frank Stone says he bought a Jack Russell portrait of the comedian for ?300, but says Russell's paintings typically sell for up to ?25,000.

Ninety-five-year-old Sir Norman was moved into a nursing home in the Isle of Man by his children in 2007.
