Police urge a peaceful World Cup at your local

by isleofman.com 31st May 2010
POLICE have issued a polite warning to football fans ahead of the World Cup to "enjoy yourself but behave yourself’ when watching televised games in your local pub.

The message has been delivered by the Northern Neighbourhood Policing Team but applies to all football fans on the Island.

In a pre-World Cup statement, the police said, “The theme of the campaign is to remind people of the standard of behaviour that we expect and to outline the consequences that will befall them should their behaviour warrant our intervention.”

The Northern Neighbourhood Team is working in partnership with The Ramsey and District Pub Watch Group as part of a joint campaign aimed at times when football matches will be shown in local pubs.

For the period of this year’s World Cup finals, from 11th June to 11th July, officers will be increasing visits to pubs when matches are being shown and will be offering support to licensees, if and when required.

Mandi Smith, licensee of the Britannia Public House in Ramsey, said, “Ramsey Pub Watch members are fully behind this campaign and we all look forward to welcoming people to our pubs to watch the games”.

Constable Kevin Quirk said, “It is our intention to ensure that people can come to Ramsey and relax in a safe and friendly environment whilst enjoying the hospitality of our local pubs”.
