THE ambulance service Crash Card scheme has been launched on the eve of the TT with support from the Island's own TT star Conor Cummins.
The Department of Health's Ambulance Service together with their colleagues from the East of England Ambulance Service launched the scheme last night (Friday).
It is aimed specifically at motorcycle riders and was given backing by top TT star Conor Cummins from Ramsey who has been tipped as one of the most likely riders to challenge John McGuinness for the major honours this year.
“I think this is a brilliant initiative and will help the Ambulance crew know instantly whether the person injured has any underlying medical conditions,” he said. “I personally think it’s an amazing and every motorcyclist should have one of these cards, as I feel they are essential.”
David Killip, Chief Executive Officer of the Department of Health, himself a motorcyclist, said, “I am delighted that the Ambulance Service has joined our UK colleagues in this very important initiative to improve the care provided to motorcyclists involved in accidents.
“Our aim is to have a safe TT, but I am very much reassured to know that if an accident does happen, the vital information our staff need will be readily available to them.”
Chief Ambulance Officer, Steve Sieling said: “This innovative scheme created up by Paramedics of the Ambulance Motorcycle Club and the East of England Ambulance Service has received very positive feedback from TT riders and motorcyclists.
“The card is for Medics and Ambulance crews who attend accidents and will enable them to gain vital information if someone is rendered unconscious. As part of their injury assessment processes, Ambulance crews routinely check crash helmets following an accident. They are very well trained in the removal of crash helmets and where possible helmets should always be left in place until the emergency services arrive.”
The Crash Cards are available from Ambulance Headquarters (Noble’s Hospital, Braddan), motorcycle outlets, the Welcome Centre at the Sea Terminal, Police Headquarters and also ambulance staff will be distributing them throughout the Island during the TT fortnight and beyond.
If for any reason you cannot obtain one, please telephone 01624 642582, leave a message and the Ambulance Service will respond.
