Robertshaw wins Douglas East election

by isleofman.com 28th May 2010
CHRIS Robertshaw has succeeded at his third attempt to become a Member of the House of Keys, winning the by-election in East Douglas last night.

In the most controversial by-election for many years, the former managing director of the Sefton Hotel took 388 votes in a low turn-out poll to beat Kate Beecroft (301) and Kevin Woodford (276).

Mr Robertshaw described the election as taking place in “extraordinary” circumstances but pledged that he would work tirelessly for his constituents and to face “head on” the economic difficulties facing the Isle of Man at present, stating “it’s time for change”.

However, the controversy rumbles on and is likely to continue after some voters apparently reported that they had arrived at the polling station to fill in a ballot paper, only to find their vote had already been registered by proxy.

RESULT:

Chris Robertshaw 388
Kate Beecroft 301
Kevin Woodford 276
Colin Cain 245
Jon Joughin 146
Chris Heath  72

Votes cast: 1434. Percentage vote: 37%
