Basking sharks - 82 sightings so far

by isleofman.com 27th May 2010
THERE have been 82 sightings of basking sharks in Manx waters this month so far, says the Manx Wildlife Trust.

The warm weather and calm seas have proved ideal for the sharks which have been spotted in schools of up to ten at a time.

The Isle of Man has more sightings every year than anywhere else in the British Isles, with 877 last year.

Basking sharks can grow up to to 10m in length and often gather in large groups around the Manx coast between May and September.

The Isle of Man is a hotspot for the placid creatures because its location collects big plankton blooms which provide a perfect feeding ground.

Eleanor Stone, marine officer at the Manx Wildlife Trust, said, "We are really pleased to see basking sharks returning to the Isle of Man year after year.

"The current weather conditions are perfect for spotting these tranquil creatures, and we are currently receiving sightings every single day."

The sharks can be spotted off the south and southwest coast of the island, with prime viewpoints at Sound Cafe, Port Erin Bay, Peel Headlands, Peel breakwater and Niarbyl.
