KEVIN Woodford’s controversial House of Keys election campaign has led to further questions which will be heard in the House of Keys tomorrow (Tuesday).
David Cannan, MHK for Michael, will ask the Chief MInister about government’s future policies on election campaigning and financial donations.
Mr Cannan wants the Council of Ministers to “introduce with immediate effect” a statutory order where the name of a donor is publicly recorded in respect of all donations to the election expenses of every candidate seeking election to the House of Keys.
Mr Cannan was highly critical of the anonymous backing of Mr Woodford in the Douglas East bye-election where a “blind trust” was financially supporting him with offices and widespread banner publicity.
The “Manx Election Trust” is behind the campaign but Mr Woodford has said he does not know who is behind the trust and that he would not object to the law being changed to outlaw anonymous blind trusts getting involved in elections in the future.
The Douglas East by-election is this Thursday (May 27th). The other candidates are Kate Beecroft of the Liberal Vannin Party, and independents Colin Cain, Jon Joughin, Chris Heath, and Chris Robertshaw.
In another question, Mr Cannan will ask whether the Chief Minister is aware of the allegations of the misuse and fraudulent use of proxy application forms in respect of the East Douglas by-election and, if so, what action is proposed to verify these allegations?
