Crimestoppers calls up by 27%

by isleofman.com 22nd May 2010
THE number of people calling the Isle of Man Crimestoppers service rose by 27% last year, figures have revealed.

The charity, which allows the public to give information about crime anonymously, took 145 calls between April 2009 and the end of March.

Officials said the quality of tip-offs had also been high, leading to the arrest or conviction of nine people.

The figures coincide with statistics which show crime on the Island is at its lowest level since 1981.

The total number of crimes committed on the island from April 2009 to March of this year dipped to fewer than 3,000.

Stuart McCudden, chair of Isle of Man Crimestoppers, said, "We are delighted with these latest results. Despite the overall level of crime continuing to fall, we remain keen that the Island operates a zero tolerance in respect of criminal activity.

"The high volume of calls indicates more people are aware that they can report details of crimes easily and that they value the anonymous aspect of reporting offered by Crimestoppers."

Home Affairs Minister Adrian Earnshaw MHK said everyone in the community had a part to play in keeping the Island safe.

"As an independent charity, Isle of Man Crimestoppers provides an alternative route for people who want to pass on knowledge of crime without having to deal directly with the police for whatever reason," he said.
