Steam Packet TT bookings up 8%

by isleofman.com 22nd May 2010
THE Steam Packet Company has revealed that its TT bookings are up 8% on last year.

The company increases its normal schedule by around 45 per cent for the TT period to provide additional sailings to bring the visiting motorcycle racing fans to the Island and is expecting to transport in the region of 9,500 to 10,000 bikes and over 25,000 fans each way.

In order to meet this exceptional demand, the Steam Packet Company employs and trains additional crew and shore-based staff. This year it has also chartered the services of P&O Express to provide additional sailings to the TT festival via Larne.

The increased schedule also means an increase in the number of port slots required and the company has said it is grateful for the flexibility in berthing arrangements provided by other shipping companies at this busy time of year.

In order to provide further assistance with the event, the company is once again offering its discount scheme for marshals and paramedics who cover both the TT and the Manx Grand Prix.

Chief executive Mark Woodward said, “The TT is a special occasion for all of us and one that brings with it a number of challenges for the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company as it brings into action its plans to transport and cater for over 25,000 arrivals.

‘With forward bookings up on last year and a vibrant entertainment programme in place, we have recently scheduled an additional sailing on 1 June to ensure that we can accommodate racing fans and release some extra capacity for freight space.

“TT has a unique atmosphere and I know that our staff relish the excitement that this time of year brings. I wish everyone a lively and enjoyable TT.”
