Police support anti-mephedrone campaign

by isleofman.com 14th May 2010
POLICE are supporting a display of hand-made posters devised by Auldyn Youth Club highlighting the danger of the banned class B drug mephedrone.

The posters, currently on display in Ramsey Town Hall, have been sponsored by Sure Isle of Man, based in Ramsey, and will be on display for at least a week before being put up at the Police Station.

PC Kev Quirk said, “The children at Auldyn Youth Club have come up with their own idea of what mephedrone means to them and how they wanted to get the message across to other members of the community as to what mephedrone, or “plant food” as it is commonly referred to, can do to you.”

The posters will be judged by Richard Carr of Sure Mobile, John Donnelly from Ramsey Town Commissioners and Inspector Flint, with the winning posters - one from a boy and one from a girl - made into posters to be displayed around the town.

Leaflets are also available which contain information on drugs and alcohol.

•  Mephedrone is a synthetic stimulant and entactogen drug of the amphetamine and cathinone classes. It is reported to be contained in some legal highs and is sometimes sold mixed with methylone. It is a synthetic substance based on the cathinone compounds found in the khat plant of eastern Africa. It is also referred to as “miaow miaow”.
