Mark Cavendish has been withdrawn from the Tour de Romandie for making a V sign after winning stage two of the event on Thursday.
His team removed him from the race for what they describe as his "inappropriate actions".
They released a statement after yesterday's (Fri) time trial where Cav finished 139th confirming the decision.
Cavendish said his gesture had been to tell his critics "he was back" and had not lost his talent, but has now apologised for his actions.
He says "I realise that making a rude gesture on the finish line is not the best way to do that and I apologise to everybody watching the race and especially the kids. I am not proud of releasing the feelings in that way"
"I hope I can redeem myself and show my feelings and passion for cycling with some exciting results in the next couple of months"
Cav had won eight stages by this time last year but recently has been plagued by poor health and dental problems.
