New man takes over at Council

by isleofman.com 29th April 2010

There's a new man at the head of the employees' side of Whitley Council.

Steve Salter has taken over fully from Bernard Moffatt who has now stepped down from his high profile role as the Island's best known trade unionist.

Mr Salter is also acting regional industrial organiser for the union UNITE.

He takes the reins at a time of considerable economic hardship and cutbacks in both the public and private sectors.

Whilst there has been criticism in recent years that the Council is an outdated body - after the Whitley Councils in Britain were abandoned some years ago - he believes it still has a valid role to play in industrial relations on the Island.
