The London market recovered some of yesterday’s losses as heavily weighted index constituents such as Shell, BP, HSBC and Glaxo made headway.

Higher oil prices helped Royal Dutch Shell posted a sharp rise in earnings in the first quarter of 2010. Profit jumped to $4.9bn.

Pharmaceuticals giant GlaxoSmithKlines’s first quarter results revealed turnover that was higher than expected. The dividend has been increased to 15p which helped push the price higher to ?12.24.

Royal Bank of Scotland fell 1/2p to 55.3p as shareholders at the bank’s AGM prepare to vote on the bank’s new Long Term Incentive Plan for executives.

Gold miner Randgold Resources was up 205p to ?53.60 on expectations that investors will turn to previous metals as havens during an expected period of economic turmoil.

Retail floor coverings chain Carpetright warned that UK conditions have continued to be difficult with sales falling slightly below company expectations.

Ports operator Forth Ports has rejected an improved takeover offer worth about ?640million or ?14 a share in cash received yesterday.



THE FTSE 100 WAS up 16 @ 5,586.61

WALL STREET THE LATEST DOW JONES WAS up 56 @ 2,457.53

NASDAQ WAS up 14 @ 11,048.74
