Confusion over continuation of health agreement

by isleofman.com 26th April 2010

Isle of Man residents are being reminded they are still entitled to free healthcare in the United Kingdom.

The Department of Health in the Island says some UK doctors could be under the mistaken impression a charge should be imposed.

The department says it receives several queries on the subject each year, but the position may have been complicated by the recent uncertainty over the Reciprocal Healthcare Agreement.

Island residents who encounter problems with UK doctors are being told to explain to them the agreement is still in place.

If the UK doctor or NHS organisation remains uncertain of the position, they should be advised to ring 01624 642608 for clarification.

The Reciprocal Health Agreement had been due to expire at the end of March, but has been extended for six months.

Negotiations are continuing to try a achieve a permanent deal.
