Heavy fine and ban for 'moment of madness'

by isleofman.com 22nd April 2010

A man from Douglas who called the police and told them he had been drink-driving has been fined a total of ?1,050 and banned for twelve months by Deputy High Bailiff Alastair Montgomerie.

Shane Kieran McMullan, of Douglas Avenue, admitted the charge, along with driving unsupervised on a provisional licence and having no L-plates or insurance.

McMullan called the police at 1.40am on April 10 and told them he had been unable to park a van between two cars on Port-e-Chee Avenue, because he had had too much to drink.

He had also left the van in a dangerous position.

McMullan was arrested at his house and told officers he had taken the vehicle after an argument with his girlfriend.

He was found to have almost twice the legal limit of alcohol in his blood when he was tested at Police Headquarters.

Mr Montgomerie accepted it had been a moment of madness on McMullan's part, acknowledged the glowing references he had received and gave him full credit for the 'outstanding mitigation'.
