'Foreign object' freed by engineers

by isleofman.com 20th April 2010

Manx Electricity Authority engineers were called out on Sunday, to deal with an unusual incident.

A weather balloon came down on high voltage overhead power lines in the north of the Island.

The alarm was raised after a landowner at Ballig Farm in Jurby East reported a 'foreign object' caught in the line.

Engineers managed to free the balloon and its equipment without incident and without any disruption to power supplies.

The balloon was identified as having been launched from Castor Bay in Northern Ireland on April 15.

The authority has been in contact with the United Kingdom's Met office, which has accepted full responsibility for the incident.
