Lloyd of the Dance Wins Place at Prestigious School

by isleofman.com 19th April 2010

Local student and current Young Dancer of Mann Lloyd Mayor has been accepted at the Rambert School of Ballet & Contemporary Dance in London to study for a BA Hons degree in Ballet and Contemporary Dance.

Lloyd is a pupil at Ballakermeen High School and dances with the Academy of Dance in Ballsalla.   He won the Arts Council’s Young Dancer of Mann in 2009 with a contemporary dance piece he choreographed with Pippa Salter, despite having been learning contemporary dance for less than a year at that point.

Lloyd’s prize included a bursary to attend dance classes off the Island and he chose to attend L’Ecole de Danse de Geneve, in Geneva and to attend an audition at the Arts Educational School in London where he was accepted onto their A Level course. Lloyd will attend workshops at the Martha Graham School of Contemporary dance in America when he finishes his GCSEs this summer.

Rambert School remains one of the world's premier professional dance schools both in terms of training and choreographic invention, providing the opportunity for students to reach a high standard of professional and personal accomplishment.

Rambert School is an affiliate of the Conservatoire of Dance and Drama and is recognised internationally as one of the small group of first-level professional dance schools of the world.

The Isle of Man Arts Council has brought the world renowned Rambert Dance Company to the Gaiety Theatre on more than one occasion.

Lloyd was born in Geneva but comes from a Manx family with a history of dance. His grandmother Pauline Edge, was the first Manx child to receive a grant from the Department of Education to attend the Royal Ballet School.

Quintin Gill MHK, Chairman of the Arts Council said, "We are delighted to see Lloyd continuing his successful pursuit of dance.

"His talent shone through in the Young Dancer of Mann competition last year and he joins the increasing numbers of young Manx people continuing their career in the UK to further their artistic abilities and ambitions.

"On behalf of the Arts Council I would like to wish Lloyd the very best of luck."
