Fresh Taste of the Sea in Castletown's Malew Street

by isleofman.com 17th April 2010

Lovers of fresh fish and seafood will be glad to know that there are now two places in the South of the Island where the very best can be found.

‘Paddy’s The Quay’ in Port St Mary has long been a favourite destination for food lovers; now, shoppers in Castletown can enjoy the same experience, as ‘Paddy’s Malew Street’, the new fishmonger and delicatessen, is open for business.

Manning the counters at Malew Street are Paddy Croft himself and Castletown woman Alison Kelly (both pictured).  The Quay in Port St Mary, meanwhile, is still run by the familiar team of Ian, Terry, Chris and Dave.

The new Paddy’s outlet complements several small businesses in Malew Street which have a strong local following and support the community in their turn.  Radcliffe’s, the butchers, have a popular stall at the Saturday market run alongside Paddy’s The Quay.

Paddy's Malew Street boasts a superb choice of wet fish, seafood and hand-prepared fish dishes, as well as a selection of Continental cheeses and charcuterie.

From Seabass and Monkfish to live Langoustines, creel-caught Prawns and Manx Queenies, the wet fish counter offers a true taste of the sea.

Customers can also buy vacuum-packed fish to send overseas and mixed seafood platters made up to order, not to mention classic appetisers such as kipper pate, rollmop herrings and pickled anchovies.

The Chef’s Larder is stocked with freshly prepared fish cakes, fish pies, seafood mornays, spring rolls, sushi and quiches, all of which are popular with time-hungry customers who still want a tasty meal.

Finally, the European 'deli' counter is brimming with hand-picked cheeses and speciality meats, including pancetta, chorizo, and Serrano and Parma ham.

With the promise of al fresco dining in the air (unpredictable Manx weather permitting!), Paddy’s is also busy preparing barbecue-ready dishes and introducing a wide variety of companion sauces and relishes to the shelves.

With seasonal fresh fruit and vegetables planned for the store, Paddy’s Malew Street makes it easy to avoid trawling to the supermarket.

Tim Croft, who oversees both Paddy’s outlets as the Managing Director of Island Seafare, comments, "We’re delighted to bring the Paddy’s name to Castletown, and with it the delicious fish and seafood for which we have become known Island-wide.

"It’s great to join a host of local businesses who help to keep Castletown a thriving place, and we look forward to serving both new and familiar faces in our Malew Street shop."

Paddy’s Malew Street is open Monday to Friday from 9am – 4.30pm.

Paddy’s The Quay (including the Market) is open Tuesday to Friday from 9am – 4pm and on Saturdays from 10am – 2pm.
