Eleventh hour bid to save ferry

A last ditch attempt is being made to save the SS Manxman from the scrap yard.

A new charity, SOS Manxman Company, has been set up by a Wirral enthusiast, and an appeal for donations to buy the vessel appeared in a daily paper on Merseyside yesterday.

The latest campaign to save the former Steam Packet passenger ferry suggests she could be incorporated into a hotel and conference centre, close to the Birkenhead ship yard where she was built.

Fellow enthusiast Mark Woodford, who runs the Facebook group s.s manxman, believes there is still a glimmer of hope:
