The brother of Manx cycling star Mark Cavendish is one of three men jailed by Deemster Doyle for bringing drugs into the Isle of Man.
Twenty-three-year-old Andrew James Cavendish, of Lhon Dhoo Close in Onchan, admitted importing and possessing cocaine and cannabis with intent to supply.
Twenty-five-year-old Christopher Ackers, of Melling Road in Liverpool, admitted importing cannabis and cocaine and possessing both drugs with intent to supply, and Matthew William Teare, of Creggin Avenue in Peel, pleaded guilty to being involved in the importation of the drugs.
John Moss reports (text, below, from attached audio file):
The court heard Ackers got off the ferry at the Sea Terminal in September, where he was met by Cavendish.
Both men drove to Baldwin, where they were arrested by police who had them under surveillance.
Drugs worth ?67,800 were found in a spare tyre.
Cavendish was jailed for a total of six years, Ackers for eight years and Teare was given a six-year sentence for his part in the scheme.
Deemster Doyle said it was a sad case which sent out a clear message that people bringing drugs to the Island can expect severe deterrent prison terms.
