Former skipper saddened by Manxman's demise

A former master of the SS Manxman says it's a real shame the vessel, which used to sail the Irish Sea with the Steam Packet Company, is to be broken up.

On Wednesday, Sunderland-based Pallion Engineering said the ship would be scrapped after languishing in Tyne and Wear for years.

Captain Peter Corrin was in charge of the Manxman during her final season in service for the Steam Packet.

He has supported a long-running campaign to save her, but says hopes of restoration are now all but over:
