Means testing for some student grants

Students applying to study at universities in the United Kingdom may have to start helping to pay their way.

If new rules receive Tynwald's approval, undergraduates from the Isle of Man on courses lasting more than three years will be expected to contribute up to ?1,000 for each additional year.

The means tested payments would include medical courses which typically last up to five years.

Director of finance for the Department of Education and Children Ashley Halsall says the contributions medical students would be asked to make represent tiny fractions of the true costs:
