Minister pays tribute to his predecessor

The new agriculture minister has told farmers his first priority is resolving the uncertainty surrounding the future of the red meat derogation.

On Manx Radio's Countryside programme, John Shimmin said he realised the urgency of the situation, and would work with the farming community to try and achieve the best result.

The long standing agreement protects the Isle of Man from foreign imports, but is due to end later this year.

However, key figures in the industry recently said they were optimistic it might be extended.

Mr Shimmin also noted the contribution his predecessor made to the agriculture sector and said he would spend the next few months learning the ropes (play audio file):
