Bethany to Run the Country!

by isleofman.com 26th March 2010

Ultra long distance runner Bethany Clague is asking for support in her new challenge - a run from John O'Groats to Land's End.

Bethany, who famously completed two circuits of the Parish Walk in 2008, is now poised to take on the 860-mile run down the length of the United Kingdom in May 2010.

As well as presenting a tough physical challenge, Bethany is hoping to raise money for three local charitable causes through the run.

"I would like to raise a thousand pounds for each charity – Graih, Kemmyrk and 'Friends of STAR Club'.

"Graih provides help and temporary accommodation for men over 25 years old who have difficulties with addictions and unemployment.

"Unfortunately, the accommodation is unsuitable – residents sleep on sofas and the kitchen is tiny – as Graih became 'homeless' itself.

"The money raised will help to clothe and feed these men and hopefully enable the charity to rent better accommodation with beds and bedrooms.

"Kemmyrk provides help, support, advice and mediation for young people who are or may become homeless on the Island.

"There is a nightstop scheme placing the homeless young adult with volunteers for a few nights while problems are resolved.  Kemmyrk also teaches children in schools the reality of being homeless.

"Lastly, the STAR Club is a clubhouse run by and for adults with mental illness.   The premises are located in Douglas and it provides activities and support for adults who often have low self-confidence and self-esteem.

"Recently, the clubhouse has opened its own bank account so money raised now goes directly to it.  STAR stands for 'Steps To Aid Recovery'; I attend and have been greatly helped by it.

Bethany, who lives in Onchan, will begin her challenge on 30th April and aims to finish on 14th May, running an average of 50-63 miles per day.  She will return to the Island on 17th May.

In her group, she will be the only Isle of Man runner and one of only three women.
