by isleofman.com 25th March 2010

A client relationship officer at Standard Bank has climbed the highest mountain in Africa to raise funds for local children’s charity Oskars Dreams.

Nick Firth, 22, reached the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro on the 21st February 2010 after trekking and camping for seven days and six nights with a team of 15, including his parents Paula and Peter Firth.

The team walked roughly 6 hours each day and Nick was one of only four to reach the summit, where the temperature dropped as low as minus 15 degrees celsius.

Throughout the trek, the team camped along the way and were supported by guides including a chef who prepared their breakfast, lunch and dinner each day to keep them going.

The effort was well worth it, with Nick raising over ?1,500 sponsorship, including a donation from his employers, who challenged Nick to raise the Standard Bank flag at the summit!

Nick said, "The trek was my father’s idea and as a family we undertook plenty of training to get ready for the walk in February.

"Flying the Standard Bank flag when I was at the top was a wonderful feeling and I was delighted to be able to do this whilst also raising money for a very important local charity which does so much for children in the Island."

Talking of future fundraising plans and challenges, Nick said, "I have unfinished business with Mont Blanc.

"A couple of years ago, I didn’t quite manage to make it to the top and I would really like to try that one again.  I am also looking to run my first marathon this year and will once again raise funds for Oskars Dreams."

John Coyle, Managing Director of Standard Bank Isle of Man, said, "To see a member of staff challenge themselves for the benefit of others, the way Nick has, is very admirable and we congratulate him on his achievement."

After completing the trek, The family enjoyed a rest after the trek staying in a coffee plantation.

Mr Firth was born in the Isle of Man and has worked for Standard Bank for nearly two years. He plays for the Police football team and lives in Douglas, Isle of Man
