Defendant used false name to withdraw cash

by isleofman.com 25th March 2010

Sentence on a 41-year-old woman who obtained ?3,000 by deception has been adjourned by the deputy high bailiff.

Avril Christine Dentith, of Snugborough Avenue in Braddan, admitted the theft of ?3,000 and attempting to steal ?9,000.

She went to the Isle of Man Bank on Prospect Terrace in Douglas on July 28 last year and asked to withdraw ?9,000 in the name of Catherine Ann Giles.

Staff refused the request as Dentith could not produce documentation to show why she wanted the money.

She said it was to buy a car valued at ?12,000 which she could get for ?9,000 but that she wouldn't be able to get the documents.

Her explanations weren't accepted, but she was able to withdraw ?3,000 in Mrs Giles' name.

The court heard Mrs Giles queried her bank statement about a fortnight later and the bank refunded the money when she said she hadn't made the withdrawal.

CCTV footage was examined, and Dentith was arrested.

She was bailed for one month to April 23, when she will be sentenced.
