by isleofman.com 19th March 2010

A unique concert involving the Isle of Man Wind Orchestra and the Manx Youth Wind Orchestra takes place on Saturday 27th March at 7.30pm in St German’s Cathedral, Peel.

The concert, being held in support of the Anne Frank [+ You} Exhibition (4th - 29th March), will be one of the largest and most exciting musical experiences on the Island this year and will involve more than 80 musicians performing some classic wind orchestra repertoire as well as some more modern transcriptions and original compositions.

The programme will include American Patrol, Alleluia Laudamus Te, highlights from the musical 'Wicked' and Soul Bossa Nova.

Each group will perform a varied programme of music and there will be two pieces played as a massed ensemble.

Paul Dunderdale, musical director with the Isle of Man Wind Orchestra, said, "I am particularly looking forward to the final piece with both groups, which will be James Bond theme tunes produced to a high energy, spectacular, finale."

The Isle of Man Wind Orchestra, formed in 1997 with 15 players, has grown from strength to strength.  It performs many concerts during the year all over the Island, including Tynwald Day, and hosts regular workshop weekends involving guest conductors.

Last year the Isle of Man Wind Orchestra competed in the British Association of Symphonic Wind Bands and Ensembles, where it gained a gold award in the regional contest and a silver award in the finals in Cardiff.

The Manx Youth Wind Orchestra was formed in the late 1970s as a subsidiary of the Manx Youth Orchestra.  It rehearses every Saturday morning during term-time.

In July 2008, it toured Belgium and gave some outstanding performances to receptive audiences.  All the members of the Manx Youth Wind Orchestra are in full-time education.

Conductor of the Manx Youth Wind Orchestra Jennifer Cook said, "This is the first time in the history of these groups that they have performed together in the same concert and it is going to be a fantastic event, with music to suit all tastes."

Tickets are available on the door priced ?5 for adults and ?3 for students.
