Charity swimmers step-up Irish Sea preparations

A group of intrepid swimmers is aiming to make it across the Irish Sea at the start of TT Week, all in the name of a good cause.

The ten plan on swimming the 47 miles between Barrow and Laxey as a relay to raise funds for the local BallaAfrica charity, with ?50,000 the target.

Those taking part are heading out for a four-hour deep sea swim this morning (9am) as their preparations for the real thing continue.

One of them is Dave Dawson, who's on BallaAfrica's committee.

He says this morning's outing is quite a step up in their training programme:
